Be Selfish

Today, I picked up my pen to write. Not sure exactly what to write about. I just wanted to write. I have not written in a long time because I felt I did not have the time to write, then I remembered the popular quote “if you wait until you are ready, you will never be ready”.

As a born nurturer, oftentimes, you burn yourself out trying to make sure that everyone around you is fine. You leave yourself out and console yourself with “as long as they are happy, you are happy”. But are you really happy?

The people that you give your all to often get comfortable with taking from you and the moment you try to take a step back to focus on yourself, you become a bad person and if you are not careful, you are going to ruin a lot of relationships.

While I sat down reminiscing about life inside the conference room at work, I realized that it is okay to be selfish. Every good thing that you give out, you deserve it. It is okay to make sacrifices for the ones you love, but not all the time. It will drain you out. You cannot save everybody and that’s fine. It’s okay to want to be taken cared of the same way that you care for others. You are not asking for too much and you are not being selfish. You are just being human.

Sometimes what looks like selfishness is actually self-preservation. You can’t keep giving emotionally, physically, or mentally

if you’re drained. Replenishing yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. You can only pour into others when your own cup is full.
