Every human being at some point in life will encounter difficulties and challenges. It could be financial, academic, moral or even emotional challenge. What makes some of these challenges difficult to face or bear is lack of support.
In this part of the world, people see difficulty as a competition. When a person who is going through a tough time opens up about it, instead of us to give them a listening ear or empathise with them, we attack them with “your own is even better, if you know what I went through ” and before you know it we would already be talking about our own predicaments.
This is a bad habit that we have. Whenever a struggling person comes to us to talk about their problems, even if we cannot do anything to solve it, the least we can do is to give them a listening ear and empathise with them. Sometimes they don’t even need our advice, all they need is a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on and “everything will be alright”. I don’t think that is too much to do.

Absolutely, comparison in despair isn’t a positive way of relatability from an empathetical perspective. I love the way you made difference from sympathy because truly we can never understand what an individual is going through except we’re going through it as well, so offering a listening ear , a shoulder to cry on and being friend in despair is the best response for empathy – amazing write up.
